VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 8:

The controversy which has erupted over the lands allotted for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management in the Gambheeram mandal has been resolved and the stage is set for launching the IIM here.

Many farmers and quarry workers in the earmarked area do not have "pattas" (title deeds) and therefore are not eligible for compensation but are agitating for it, as their livelihood will be affected by the project.

The State HRD Minister, G. Srinivasa Rao, has said the issue has been resolved and the Union HRD Minister, Smriti Irani, along with the Chief Minister, N. Chandra Babu Naidu, will participate in the foundation stone- laying ceremony on January 17. Earlier, it was scheduled for January 5 but it had to be postponed due to the agitation of farmers.

Admission of students will begin from the academic year (2015-16) itself and the IIM will be temporarily housed in Andhra University and subsequently shifted to Gambhiram after the completion of the campus construction.

The district authorities have identified more than 400 acres of government land in the Gambheeram mandal for the setting up of the educational institute but only 20 or so of the farmers in the area have D form pattas (lands assigned by the Government) and the rest do not have title deeds, though they have been cultivating the lands unauthorisedly for years. Therefore, most of the farmers and others such as quarry workers in the area are not eligible for compensation, and it has become a livelihood issue.

Those who do not have pattas are demanding that they be given pattas now and paid compensation on a par with patta-holders, a demand which the authorities say is not a tenable one.

The minister held discussions with the farmers on Thursday and said that, "the interests of the genuine farmers in the area will be taken care of and the farmers have agreed to the proposal."

He said compensation would be paid in accordance with the GO issued for the purpose, and the livelihood concerns would also be addressed. He sought the co-operation of the local leaders and the public for the establishment of the prestigious institute in their area.
