The first is the move to dimensional weight pricing at FedEx Ground takes effect this week. This shift to “dim weight” pricing is being done because generally FedEx runs out of space on its trucks before the trucks are over-weight. As a result, there is a lot of empty space that can be used to carry more packages. FedEx is basically forcing retailers to pack more efficiently, and has worked with its customers for the past eight months to design more efficient packages. If retailers cannot be smarter about the way they pack, they will be paying more. This shift to dim weight pricing is a rate increase. The Annual Rate Increase also takes effect this week. FedEx raised rates 4.9% for its customers; this is the base rate. There are some customers who will not see this large of an increase because of their volume, so we are estimating that average rates will actually increase by about 2.5%. Becker has a price target of $210 on FedEx, and thinks the express shipper will earn $9.05 for fiscal year 2014, above the consensus for $8.99 and the company’s range of $8.50 to $9.00.
