ARYA Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 ZOO NI TESESI IT PARK KI ISTAM ANNA PROPOSAL KI SUPPORT CHESATARA? bye1 IF THIS SPECULATION IS TRUE IT IS A REALLY BIG MISTAKE BY THE GOVT bye1 Andhra Pradesh government planning to shift zoo to make way for IT Park? VISAKHAPATNAM: Is the state government planning to shift the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) to make way for a botanical garden or an IT park, endangering the lives of over 500 species of birds and animals that call the zoo home? Even as state HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao stirred up a hornet's nest recently at a public function stating that the zoo would be shifted to put up a botanical garden, IGZP sources alleged that the move was aimed at shifting the zoo to Adivivaram on the BRTS stretch so that an IT hub could come up at the present zoo location to make Naidu's so called 'smart city' dreams a reality. The buzz has already raised the hackles of environmentalists and the general public, who fear that the move is only aimed at snatching away the remaining few tracts of forest land in the city to convert them into concrete jungles in the name of development. "The proposal is nothing but a move to benefit realtors. An acre of land from IGZP area to Bheemili on Beach Road costs Rs 5-10 crore following many developmental proposals like film studios," state CPM executive committee member Ch Narsinga Rao alleged. "Huge money and political interests are involved in the proposal. The zoo comes under Central Zoo Authority and is not the private property of any politician or the state government. Politicians keep making controversial statements to please certain sections of the population. Even if they want, shifting this huge zoo is not feasible and can't be allowed at any cost," said a zoo official. Environmentalists point out that shifting a zoo like IGZP, which is spread over 600 acres, is difficult and would disturb the already Hudhud disturbed biodiversity of the city further. Hudhud not only wiped out a chunk of the zoo's green cover and left many species dead, it had demolished most of the city's green cover. The central government have given around Rs 2 crore and the state government Rs 40 lakh for restoration works in addition to several proposals to give the zoo a new look. Zoology experts too feel the move would prove to be fatal for the lives of the birds and animals housed there as they have acclimatized over the past several years. "Human beings can change their residence as they have the ability live anywhere but the same is not possible for animals. The species residing at the zoo have adjusted to the conditions here and changing their habitat may pose a threat to their lives," said former AU zoology department head Prof Erri Babu, pointing out that if the government wanted to shift the zoo there was no alternative forested land in a 50-km vicinity of the existing zoo. But the government's plans may be easier said than done. A forest department official pointed out that as the zoo is located on the Sita Konda forest reserve area any changes in the forest reserve areas have to be cleared by the National Board of Wildlife. IGZP, which was set up in 1972 and was the largest zoo in undivided Andhra Pradesh after Hyderabad's Nehru Zoological Park, attracts over 4,000 visitors a day and rakes in nearly Rs 10 lakh per annum from ticket sales.
