Apple Granted Patent to Make GoPro-Type Device

News doesn't necessarily mean Apple will enter sports cam market.

Apple was recently granted a patent to develop a device that bears similarities to GoPro cameras.

Shares of GoPro stock dropped roughly 12 percent Tuesday after Apple was granted a patent for a remote control camera system that could be controlled by a camera or watch, suggesting the company might enter the sports camera market.

However, Apple Insider reports that this was a reassignment of a patent formerly belonging to Kodak, which Apple acquired in an auction and only modified slightly.

The approval of the patent does not necessarily mean that Apple will develop a product that uses the technology, but the patent application specifically cites weaknesses in earlier versions of GoPro cameras. If nothing else, the fluctuation in GoPro’s stock price shows Apple’s ability to influence the market.

This patent is for a product that could be mounted on items such as helmets and handlebars, and could be used underwater. It would take videos, photos, and record sound, much like existing GoPro cameras. While GoPro cameras are controlled by a phone or remote, Apple’s device appears to be controlled by a watch.

Reuters reports that, after Tuesday’s drop, the value of GoPro shares has dropped 51 percent since hitting a high of $98.47 per share last October. However, the stock is still up roughly 73 percent since its IPO in June 2014.
