First Indian Footballer Since 1936 To Play For A European Club

Achieving something 79 years after it was last attained is no mean feat; doing so at the age of twenty two just makes it plain epic.

Former East Bengal goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, updated history as the first Indian footballer since 1936 to play for a European club taking part in the first tier of the country’s football league. 
Signed by Norway-based club Stabaek FC in August 2014, Sandhu made the first appearance of his European career in this weekend’s 4-1 win over Follo Fotballklubb.

He is the fifth Indian to play professionally in Europe, preceded by Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Pal, with only barefoot-legend Salim holding the distinction of representing a top division club – Celtic in 1936.

Joe Morrison, the Ten sports presenter, lavished praises on Sandhu, insisting, "I don't think people fully appreciate Gurpreet's achievement. How many have tried and failed to make it in Europe before, and here is a boy who, through his own hard work and ability, has not only earned himself a permanent contract, but also now has broken into the first team.
“He could quite easily have gone for the glitz and glamour of the ISL but anyone who knows football knows that the standard in Europe is probably four of five levels above that of India."

Hailing from Mohali, Punjab, the 22-year-old made his debut for India in the AFC U-19 Championship qualification in November 2009. He was discovered by former English Premier League goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach John 'Budgie' Burridge, who invited the 6’6’’ shot-stopper to train with Wigan Athletic. Following that, he was signed up by the Norwegian club and the rest, as they say, is history.
