Vizag likely to emerge as a transhipment hub

 

With things moving in a positive direction, there is a lot of expectancy in the industrial circles that Visakhapatnam will emerge as a transhipment hub in a few years.

As part of Maritime Agenda, the Ministry of Shipping has already chosen Visakhapatnam to be made a gateway port to make it the most preferred destination for cargo to and from South Asia and Southeast Asia. “If ambitious projects like developing Vizag Chennai Industrial Corridor and a dedicated freight corridor between the city and New Delhi via Raipur materialise, the city is bound to become a transhipment hub in a few years,” CII Vizag zone vice-chairman Neeraj Sarda told The Hindu .

On the advice of Ministry of Shipping, Visakhapatnam Port Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu has submitted a detailed action plan on how to develop Visakhapatnam Port into a transhipment hub. Owing to its strategic location and a hinterland of over 700 km spread across eight States, it is said that the city could be made an ideal destination for bulk and project cargo in general and container cargo in particular.

Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd, which developed the first Greenfield all-weather terminal in 2003 as part of concession agreement it signed with Visakhapatnam Port, is now in the process of expanding the terminal with an investment of Rs.633 crore.

Connectivity to Dubai

In a significant development, Shreyas Shipping & Logistics Ltd – a part of Transworld Group of Companies -- has introduced a direct service line from Jebel Ali port (near Dubai) to Visakhapatnam Port to carry containers. Exim cargo transhipped to Colombo can now be moved out of Visakhapatnam through Jebel Ali to various destinations in the Gulf. Besides relaxation of Cabotage law, representatives from the industry have been seeking an end to route rationalisation by the railways as it is not helping the trade from the city and abolition of Tariff Authority for Major Ports regime to facilitate a level playing field for major and non-major ports.
