Flamboyant Jamaica and West indies batsman Chris Gayle and India's legendary player Sachin Tendulkar have been voted as the greatest One Day International opening batsmen of all time.

The poll conducted by the BBC, over the last week saw Tendulkar receiving 29 percent of the votes with Gayle tallying 25 percent.

The squad is broken down into opening batsmen, middle-order batsmen, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, pace bowlers and spin bowlers.

Gayle was also voted in the greatest One Day International XI of all time after a career that saw him featuring in 263 ODI’s while making 8,881 runs at an average of 36.85 with a strike rate of 84.22.

The hard-hitting lefthander has dominated the Twenty20 game but has also scored more ODI runs than any other West Indies batsman except Brian Lara. One of only three batsmen - along with Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi - to hit more than 200 sixes and also has 158 wickets to his name.

Tendulkar meanwhile has the played the most ODI’s 463, most ODI runs 18,426, most ODI hundreds 49. The ‘Little Master’ was also the first man to score a one-day international double hundred and also compiled 96 half centuries in a glittering career that was crowned with the 2011 World Cup win in his home city of Mumbai.

Also making the greatest one-day international XI of all time were a pair of legendary West Indians Brian Lara and Sir Viv Richards who both earned a place in the middle order.

Lara, having played in 299 ODI’s, made 10,405 runs at an average of 40.48 with a strike rate of 79.51.  A slayer of attacks, with huge back-lift usually followed by a flowing cover drive or a one-legged pull shot. Lara is most famous for his individual records in Test cricket and is one of only three non-Asian batsmen (along with Australia's Ricky Ponting and South Africa's Jacques Kallis) to have registered more than 10,000 ODI runs.

Sir Viv, also known as The 'Master Blaster', is perhaps the most devastating batsman of all. A two-time World Cup winner, including a man-of-the-match performance in the 1979 final he played in 187 ODI’s while making 6,721 runs at an average of 47.00 with a blistering strike rate of 90.20

Also making the team are AB de Villiers (South Africa) who earned a place in the middle order and  Adam Gilchrist (Australia) who was voted in as wicketkeeper.

Jacques Kallis (South Africa) received the nod ahead of Sir Ian Botham, Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Shahid Afridi and Lance Klusener as the greatest ODI All-rounder while the fast bowling unit is completed by Wasim Akram (Pakistan) and Australians Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath with another Aussie in Shane Warne the lone spinner.

Participants voted for the different components of the team from a list of players nominated, with the only criterion being that the players must have appeared in a One Day International, with World Cup performances carrying no extra weight.
