yes, that's why one of my titles was

"Ranji Trophy is more interesting than the world cup"

if you think so... but WC is a well marketed product...

I can say a chess tournament in my colony is far more exciting than Anand taking a Ukranian kid on the grand stage.... but the second one is world stage and is a well marketed one so people find it more interesting and the audience count is smashing

ofcourse every opinion is subjective unless it comes with a stat

Okay, I picked the wrong game to compare cricket with. But since I don't follow any other team sport, the best I could do is to compare it with tennis in the 90s, and even the early 2000s. and now.

yeah, I understand why people want to hang on to great people, even without understanding what their game is about.

I've seen it both in Chess, and Tennis.

But the point I'm trying to make is different. Its for fans like us.

Like you, for example.. Why do you watch football?

In tennis, its obvious. I've made it several times in passing here.

Tennis now sucks beyond redemption. Because every player is like a clone of Djokovic.

And Nadal's like an extremely talented spam bot to which nobody in tennis had an answer to, until he injured himself.

Wouldn't your rant attain monotony if you compare every other era of Tennis to a couple of legends that graced that period ala Wilander, Bjorg, McEnroe, Pete-Andre, Martina's-Steffi etc akin to Chess with the likes of Fischer, Karpov, Kasparaov, Carlsen etc?

so my point is.

There's comes a stage to every game/sport, when its saturated and becomes predictable.

Cricket has reached it faster, because only a few teams play it.

Tennis has reached it too, because of other reasons (that's a much bigger rant)

Wololo..

Since I enjoy the games you mention, I'll say that thos eras still had freaks operating on the margins.

like in tennis.. Alberto Berasategui..

to an extent, even Gustavo Kuerten (even though he was world number 1, he was an outsider always)

and now a couple of freaks wander about, but they are not as successful as the freaks were before.

Which is why I wonder..

at what point in time would Ricky Ponting have thought.. "enough of this shyte, I'm going home", when he was racking up centuries left and right.

Wouldn't you agree on the fact that both those guys were top-notch while playing on clay courts and not on all other surfaces? Granted there are freaks out there, but not totally dominating at all the levels possible like Pete or Steffi? Not trying to disparage your comments here, BTW
