Bulk Cargo Terminal Ready For Commissioning At Vizag Port

East Asia, is getting ready to commission the six million tonne multi-commodity bulk terminal.

The futuristic berth built by Alba, a joint venture of ABG Ports Ltd and Louis Dreyfus Armateurs was likely to receive ships on a trial after which it would launch commercial operations sometime next month, a senior official of Visakhapatnam Port told The Hindu on Monday.

In the first year of operations, the BOT operator will handle 2.5 million tonne and achieve full rated capacity of six million tonne in the fourth year.

Developed on a 30-year concession agreement signed with the BOT operator, the berth will have the flexibility to handle various cargoes such as steel and granites, lam and pet coke and metallurgical coke. An investment of Rs.230 crore has been made in the project under develop, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT).

West Quay Multiport Pvt. Ltd, the special purpose vehicle for the project, recently acquired two level luffing cranes from DHHI of China at a cost of Rs.80 crore. The cranes with a lifting capacity of 160 tonne can discharge 20,000 tonne per day.

Designed to handle Panamax vessels with a stockyard of 12.2 acres and backup area of 1,000 sq. metres, the terminal will help the port in ensuring faster evacuation of cargo.

Visakhapatnam Port which is planning to increase its capacity to 124 million tonnes by 2016-17 is in the process of launching work on extension of existing container terminal by Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd at a cost of Rs.633 crore and capacity augmentation and mechanisation of Ore Handling Complex by Essar Group at a cost of Rs.845 crore.
