Yes man, I am a kid. So trying to correct ur big mistake.. so exactly tell me what will your expression based high level query will return if there is more than . One date, even though with a coalesce.. can't laugh more if you ever thought about that case before you answered..

if not exists (Select 1 from table where id = @id)
Select null
Else

Nullif gives you null if input1 and input2 are equal man... coalesce will give first non null value in a series of values..
