A 23-year-old student, Humberto Moura Fonseca, has died during a drinking competition after swallowing 25 shots of vodka within 60 seconds.

Fonseca, a student of the University of Julio de Mesquita was taking part in a drinking game in Bauru, South-Western Brazil, when he met his death, Metro reports.

Ironically, he wrote ‘it is better to die from vodka than from boredom' on his Facebook profile.

His friend, 23-year-old Rodrigo Pancetti, said the deceased suddenly collapsed and died after drinking the strong drink.

"Humberto and the others were really up for it," Pancetti said.

"On his Facebook there’s a quote, a motto, from the Russian poet Vladimir Maiakovski which says “It is better to die from vodka than from boredom."

"I never thought that would become reality. But once he had finished he said he felt ill and suddenly collapsed," the friend added.

Students and medical personnel tried to get Fonseca to the hospital but he died on the way.

Doctors later confirmed that he died from alcohol poisoning.

University of Julio de Mesquita authorities released a statement through a spokesman following the student's death.

"We very much regret the death of this young man and our condolences go out to his family and friends," the university spokesman said.
