JANASENA Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 At the time of independence, Kashmir was ruled by a Hindu Maharaja, Raja Hari Singh.Nehru allowed Sardar Patel to have control of annexing all the other princely states except Kashmir, saying that Kashmir being his native place, he knows better on how to deal with it. Sardar achieved success everywhere. He managed to unite 550+ princely states into India. In local Kashmiri politics, Nehru always sided with Sheikh Abdulla and never liked Raja Hari Singh. The Raja felt insecure to be part of India led by Jawaharlal Nehru. He worried that once the Instrument of Accession is signed, he will be put behind bars by Nehru and Sheikh. Hence, he waited to sign it. The delay in turn gave a chance to Pakistan to invade a major portion of Kashmir. The best stance that India should have taken those days was to use the legality of Instrument of Accession to fight for Kashmir. Instead, the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru promised the UN that a plebiscite will be held in which Kashmiris can vote and decide their future. It was one of the major blunders committed in independent India due to which we are still struggling.
