Poverty threatens to nix IIIT students’ Nasa trip

6 Students Selected For Space Project Competition

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Mahbubnagar: Six students from the Basara IIIT have been selected for the prestigious space project competition of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), but they may not make it to the United States of America to showcase their innovative ideas because of their poor financial background.

The Nasa has shortlisted 169 projects of students from India for the international competition on “human existence in space” scheduled for next month. Of these, 30 projects are from Andhra Pradesh.

Another uphill task they face is to get passports since all the six students of the Basara IIIT team are minors. As their parents don’t have passports it’s not going to be easy for the minor students to obtain those vital travel documents. The students now look towards government for support to undertake their dream voyage to the Nasa competition from May 24 to 29. Five of the six students are be girls. The students, P Nikhila, M Preethi, A Sowmya, B Sravanthi, Ch Sai Susmitha and M Ramakrishna, hail from the backward districts of Mahbubnagar, Rangareddy, Medak and Srikakulam. Their project, Indra Prastha, explains how human beings can colonize the space. It also speaks of the basic infrastructure needed to survive in the harshest of the atmosphere outside the protective Mother Earth, as also the cheapest mode of transportation between the Earth and the Space including the Moon and asteroids

They have also been selected for presentation at the International Space Development Conference of Nasa at Sandiego, USA. They are from PUC-II class of Basara IIIT, one of the three such institutions established in the state to promote local talent.

“Pursuing IIIT is a big challenge for us. We are on government scholarship. How can bear the expenditure of our trip to the US,” said Nikhila, who hails from Mahbubnagar district.

Team member Preethi too feels that unless they get financial aid, they may not make their presentation to Nasa scientists.

Other projects selected for the Nasa competition from Andhra Pradesh are Titan and Garuda by IIIT-Nuzvid and Dhruva (Ravindra Bharathi School). These students too face difficulty in obtaining passports.

“Paying the examination fee itself is a big task for our family,” observes Sai Susmitha of Srikakulam.

“It is indeed an honour for Andhra Pradesh. Our students are second to none provided they get the right opportunity,” said Prof G Haragopal.
