Green brigade files fresh plea to save Hussainsagar - The Times of India

HYDERABAD: The city's green brigade continued its desperate attempts to save the iconic Hussainsagar on Wednesday by submitting a fresh Special Leave Petition (SLP) with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), South Zone. They pleaded that the NGT advance the hearing of the earlier petition, filed under the Save Our Urban Lakes banner, seeking a stay on the dewatering of the lake. The hearing had initially been posted for June 10.

The plea comes in the wake of Tuesday's Supreme Court order that directed the NGT to set up an expert committee to "verify that the work undertaken by the state government is limited to the repairs of the sluices and there is no unnecessary dewatering of the lake". It also granted the NGT the authority to "order such a team to give its report expeditiously". The apex court, however, refrained from issuing any directive to the Telangana government on the dewatering issue.

According to sources, the matter is likely to come up for hearing before the NGT on Thursday.

"It is very important that the matter be heard urgently and a team, comprising experts, take up the case as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will be impossible to save the historic water body," said environmentalist, Capt J Rama Rao

. He rued: "It is not difficult to ascertain that the state government is deliberately doing it. Repair works cannot involve the breaking down of surplus weirs - put in place to maintain the full tank level of a reservoir. They are making a mockery of us and the people of the city."

SOUL members, too, unanimously, backed the argument. They complained how state governments in the past too had made deliberate attempts to 'seal' the Hussainsagar. This, of course, is the most drastic of them all, they maintained. "My heart is burning to see the chief minister eye the lake as another real estate venture. Especially because I went all the way up to the SC to get a stay on the proposed YSR memorial - during the Congress regime - that was supposed to come up on the 28-acre water body. The depth of the lake has already dropped by four feet. Why can't the government direct its energies towards protecting the lake instead of ruining it?" questioned an enraged, Omim Debara, member of SOUL.

But while environmentalists are sure of continuing their battle for as long as possible, some of them fear that it will be get mired in a vicious legal cycle. "That's what has been happening to date. The NGT passed an order which the Hyderabad High Court stayed (on dewatering of the lake). Even the SC, instead of directly ordering the setting up a committee to look into the case - as it has done in the past - passed the buck back to the NGT. Now, even if the NGT issues orders in favour of the green brigade, the government can always approach another court of law to get it stayed. So, I wonder, what really the fate of Hussainsagar is," said an environmentalist, on condition of anonymity.
