Minister Says His Wife Has Never Been Eve-Teased Since She Wears Sari

India is not new to controversies surrounding rape cases and what politicians have to say about them.

Today, Goa Minister for Factories and Boilers, Deepak Dhavalikar has blessed us with his take on what he feels causes rape.

“When girls used to follow Hindu culture, there were no instances of rape. Now, people have changed the way they behave and dress and you have seen how the number of rapes are on the rise.”

Because yes, Mr. Dhavalikar, following our culture is what prevents rape.

 

His wife, Lata Dhavalikar, feels that incidents of rape are on the rise, largely owing to the fact that Indian women have adopted western culture. “Hindu men, while leaving from home, should sport a tilak, while women, kumkum. Always celebrate Gudi Padwa as the Hindu New Year and not January 1. Don’t send your children to convent school… say ‘namaskar’ instead of ‘hello’ when answering a phone call,” is what she said while addressing a convention in Margao on Sunday.

Deepak Dhavalikar defended his wife’s statement, saying: “She has lived her entire life wearing kumkum and sarees. She was never a victim of eve-teasing. That is what she must have explained to people.”

He is not the first politician to have have expressed such thoughts on such a serious issue. There are politicians who have said that “men make mistakes” or have blamed women for staying out late or wearing “provocative” clothes.
