India in general (and Hyderabad in particular) has become hunting grounds for rich Arab nationals to seek out teenage and young girls for these religiously sanctioned temporary marriages. 1992, the menace came to light when an air hostess rescued a 12-year-old girl aboard a Hyderabad-Mumbai flight; the minor was being forcibly married off to a sheikh.

That was a case of child brides, an issue which has seen good progress after much social outcry. However following the decline of method of getting young brides, a new modus operandi is in play wherein these short term marriage contracts also known as NIikah Mut'ah has came into place.

NIikah Mut'ah is not to be confused with normal Nikah, the Muslim marriage contract. Simply stated Nikāh al-mutʿah is a private and short term marriage contract made in a verbal or written format lasting from a few hours to a few months .The exact duration of the marriage and the dowry is specified and agreed upon in advance (no compensation post-marriage).
