King_Kong Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 International airport VSKP registers growth in traffic : Notwithstanding cyclone Hudhud, which had caused extensive damage to the terminal building and equipment, and brought operations to a standstill for quite a few weeks, the Visakhapatnam International Airport has registered a growth both in domestic and international traffic during the just concluded financial year. The total traffic (domestic and international), which was 10.13 lakh during 2013-14, has gone up to 11 lakh during 2014-15. The total number of international passengers, which was 54,000 during the 2013-14 fiscal, has increased marginally to 59,179 this year, according to airport Director C. Pattabhi. Air India is connecting Visakhapatnam to Port Blair twice a week with effect from April 9. IndiGo recently launched a daily flight from Ahmedabad to Visakhapatnam via Hyderabad in the mornings. The same flight operates to Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram. In the return journey in the evenings, the IndiGo flight leaves Thiruvananthapuram and arrives in Visakhapatnam at 5.30 p.m. via Chennai. It leaves for Hyderabad at 6 p.m. on its onward journey to Ahmedabad. SpiceJet, which had cancelled all its flights from Visakhapatnam, barring the Chennai service, has restored its flights to Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Air Asia has already sought permission from the airport authorities for operation of domestic flights from Visakhapatnam to Bengaluru, and these flights are expected to be launched soon. Malindo launched a direct flight from Visakhapatnam to Kuala Lumpur thrice a week a couple of months ago. Silk Air has been operating a direct flight from Visakhapatnam to Singapore thrice a week for nearly two-half-years now. Air India was the first to launch an international flight from Visakhapatnam to Dubai (via Hyderabad) three years ago. Though it has taken nearly three years for the launch of the third international flight (Malindo), the fourth international airliner Air Asia has already announced its direct flights from Visakhapatnam to Kuala Lumpur thrice a week from May 7.
