Darshwana Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 "I don't think there's anybody else in the team who has done better than me." Any player saying that cannot be a captain. No debate. Period. Forget about captaincy, self-obsessed players like Virat Kohli don't warrant a place in team sport and are dangerous to the unit's harmony. Damn the number of centuries you hit or were the reason for a win! Perhaps you were lucky to be in that space. Thank your Gods! On a personal note, the author feels robbed having calling Kohli "Attaboy!" on numerous occasions and is sure there are many who feel the same after the way our hero before today came out with an unwarranted emotional outburst. A defeat to Australia in the World Cup semi-final, where Kohli scored 1 off 13 balls, triggered angry response from fans and media that was largely directed towards Kohli's failure but wrongly related to his personal life. Yes it's wrong to drag a player's personal space into his professional career, but if you are a representative of your country, whatever be the stage, every move of yours is closely monitored and you are expected to deliver when it matters. While it's admitted that some of those reactions in the media after the semis defeat went over the line and must be condemned; but to lambast fans, who are the ones you play for, ís unbecoming of a sportsperson representing his country. When in the past have subcontinent fans not been angry for their team's failure, especially in cricket. Stoning, burning effigies, mock funerals and what not. It's normal (though should never happen) in this part of the world. But how many times have you seen a player reacting to that like Kohli did on Friday. "I was hurt. It makes you lose faith in a lot of people. Reactions were disappointing. They should be ashamed." They who, Mr. Kohli? "In last five years, the number of matches I've helped India win and the consistency I've played [with] is more than anyone else in the team." Bravo! Every fan appreciates that but doesn't expect you to beat your chest publicly at the expense of your team-mates. Grow up! "If I don't do well in two games, it's dip in form; but if some other player performs two games out of 10, they come back in form." Oh, really! Why are you so much about 'I' and 'myself'? Do we even need to remind Mr. Kohli how many times he has let his team down with his behaviour? Do we even need to bring up the finger salute or the verbal duel with Gambhir during an IPL game or the outburst against Shikhar Dhawan on Test tour Down Under or the most recent tiff with a journalist and then refusing to turn up himself to apologise? You are not a saint, Mr Kohli, and no one expects you to be. But at least behave like a gentleman to play the gentleman's game. And yes, respect the fans and consult Sachin to learn how to live with the burden of expectations.
