Rafale Fighter Jet Deal: What Does It Mean For India?

Rafale fighter jet deal: What does it mean for India? And why does it make China nervous ?

1) A fighter aircraft's main purpose is to establish air superiority over a battlefield. Since World War I, achieving and maintaining air superiority has been considered essential for victory in combat missions ( conventional warfare ). Because of the importance of air superiority, since the beginning of aerial combat, armed forces have constantly competed to develop technologically superior fighters and to deploy these fighters in greater numbers.

2) In India, the strength of fighter jets has been going down. Currently there are only 25 squadrons against the projected requirement of 44 squadrons for India to be at ease against China and Pakistan.

3) Out of the 25 squadrons, 14 are of obsolete MiG21s and MiG27s. On December 11, 2013, India's second generation supersonic jet fighter,MIG-21 FL was decommissioned after being in service for 50 years. And all MiG 27s will retired by 2017.

4) Serviceability of even new Sukhoi-350MKI ( 200 are inducted out of the 272 contracted for $12 billion ) is just about 55%.

5) There has been a huge delay in the indigenous Tejas aircraft .The programme to built light combat aircraft Tejas by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) began in 1980s. On 17 January 2015, the first Tejas LCA was officially inducted into the IAF, with final operational clearance expected by late 2015. The first Tejas squadron,to be based at Bengaluru, is scheduled to enter service by 2017-2018. Tejas Mark-11 will be ready by 2021 - 20122.

( So basically,HAL has been working on Tejas aircrafts for the last 35 years and they are still not commissioned ! )

6) A tender was floated in April 2007 for a Medium-range Multi-Role Combat Aircraft. Finally in 2012 the Rafale fighter plane was selected and a deal was signed to buy the French Rafale jets. But it ran into trouble and was put on hold for almost 3 years.

7) The Indian Air force has not purchased any major new generation aircraft in the last 17 years and delay in the Rafale jets was a big blow to it, as it was completely dependent on the Rafale fighter jets. And not getting the jets on time, would have serious implications on its operational preparedness.

9) During his visit to France, marking a breakthrough in the French Rafale jet deal, PM Narendra Modi announced that India will purchase 36 of these fighter planes that are ready to fly. Buying fighters off the shelf means the delivery would be faster and would meet a time frame set by IAF that urgently needs the aircraft to fill operational gaps.

10 ) India would buy 144 air-crafts in total, out of which 108 jets will still be assembled in India in a joint venture with France. It would mean that, France will be investing over $2.3 billion into the Indian defense manufacturing sector, giving a huge boost to the 'Make in India' initiative.

11) This is govt-to-govt deal, where all brokers, intermediaries are done away with.

The People's Daily, the Chinese newspaper, says the sale of the Rafale fighter plane 'encourages, excites and spurs India's appetite and ambition to become a great military power while intensifying its aggressive and expansionist tendencies, which poses a serious threat to peace and stability in Asia.'

The above report is a clear indication, that the procurement of Rafale jets would have a huge impact on India's military power and this development is not going down well with People's Republic of China.
