First English and French divided the countries in to multiple countires based on shia and sunni

 

shiates are minorities in most of the countries and hence they where being suppressed by Saudi Arabia.. except Iran who are shiates..

 

And American foreign policy further degraded the relations in this region leading to big turmoil in their internal relations.. and hence the crisis and civil wars.
