The wounds were still sore and yet to be healed, when a cruel mockery was made of the feelings of the farmers by the issuance of compensation cheques from the Faizabad district administration for sums as paltry as Rs 63 and Rs 84. The district magistrate has said that he will look into the matter and get the necessary corrective measures taken.

Awarding compensation and stepping down from the bar of 50% to 33% loss is a welcoming move from our government, but the amount to be compensated should be at least sufficient to fulfill the financial loss of the helpless farmers. Such a meagre compensation against acres of loss of vegetation due to natural causes shows how our Government plays with sentiments of farmers who toil with their blood and sweat to provide us with grains.

Comparatively, Delhi Government, for instance, has announced the compensation of Rs. 20, 000 per acre loss to farmers. Condition of farmers in our country is getting bad day by day. In Maharashtra alone farmer suicides shot up by over 40% in the last seven months.

Importantly, the rise is occurring even as the farm population is shrinking, a fact broadly true across the country, more so in Maharashtra which has been urbanising more rapidly than most other states. The rising-suicides-shrinking-population equation suggests a major intensification of the pressures on the community.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh lead the chart of Farmer suicides. Mohammad Sabir, a resident of Wajidpur village of Rudauli Tehsil of Faizabad district is the owner of about 5 bighas of land. After toiling throughout the season, when finally his wheat crop was about to be harvested, the sudden bad weather and downpour of ghastly rains damaged the entire field. This onslaught of weather has put him and his family on the verge of starvation and they are struggling even for their daily meals.
