In the recent auction conducted by the Andhra Pradesh government, Ramdev's Patanjali Yogpeeth, Hardwar, bought 706 tonnes of red sanders for Rs 207cr. In a seller's market dominated by the Chinese, Ramdev is perhaps the only domestic buyer of the prized wood. Authoritative sources said Patanjali Yogpeeth uses red sanders for manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines, as also perhaps incense sticks. Of the three qualities of red sanders auctioned, the A grade fetches the highest price of Rs 1.75 crore per tonne, while grade B sells for Rs 1.5 crore. The C quality, purchased by Ramdev's firm, went for about Rs 29 lakh per tonne. While it isn't clear as to what specific medicinal purposes does Patanjali Yogpeeth put to use the red sanders, among its uses in China and east Asian countries is as herbal aphrodisiac. erhaps inspired by the Baba, the TDP government in Andhra Pradesh has decided to exploit the availability of red sanders in its forests for manufacturing medicines and cosmetics. Sources said of the first lot of red sanders auctioned by the state, 300 tonnes were shipped to Hong Kong en route to China on April 8 and another 1,000 tonnes is slated to be sent to the same destination from the Krishnapatnam port on April 22. A second round of auction is scheduled in May and the government is hopeful of selling another 3,500 tonnes through the global e-bidding. The government also wants to sell the confiscated logs of red sanders from various smugglers in its territory, apart from persuading the Directorate Revenue Intelligence to hand over the 2,200 tonnes of the wood that the agency confiscated from smugglers from other parts of the country on the grounds that they belong to Andhra Pradesh. To store all the confiscated red sanders, the state is setting up a central warehouse in Tirupati in an extent of 200 acres.
