Problems For Maniratnam In Casting.

1. he is obliged to pick some aholes from his friend's circuit.

2. his wife is a loudmouthed idiot, who can't write dialogues to save her life, but still insists on being part of every maniratnam film, because the man himself can't think or write in Tamil. This makes it hard for him to cast excellent theatrical actors well versed with Tamil, because they'll laugh at the stupid dialogues his wife writes.

3. he wants his films to reach a wider market, beyond his legion of rabid fans. so he has to pick the current superstars. most of them who can't act. eg. Simran, Aishwarya Rai.

4. Everyone he knows, and deals with is an uppercaste a$$hole, so for him to write a character based on chennai's slums will be a very hard task. Even harder to find the right guy to cast it. Vikram in Raavanan was the glorious exception.

Inspite of all this, acting in his movies are top notch. Even though the movies themselves mostly suck. Nagarjuna in Geetanjali may be the only actor he couldn't get acting out of :)

p.s. I didn't watch his latest movie.

In short, Maniratnam is a magician with the wrong trick.

but what a show he puts up, inspite of this obvious handicap.

not fluently, I'm sure. He can't even speak Tamil as fluently as I can.

the only reason he hires his wife is because he's being a stingy tamilian. and the fact that his dialogues in the 80s and 90s movies are the butt of many jokes in Chennai.

strangely enough, Suhasini did the dialogues for Iruvar too. she probably woke up on the right side of the bed on all the days she wrote for Iruvar.
