State all set to introduce MV tax on TS transport vehicles

 

In a move seen as the response to the adamant stand taken by Telangana and one that will push the prices of all essential commodities, including milk, fruits, vegetables and even rice, the Andhra Pradesh government is all set to introduce motor vehicle tax on transport vehicles entering the State.

The Telangana government had imposed such a tax recently and refused to withdraw it despite repeated appeals made by the A.P. government and private bus operators. Attempts by senior officers and even those in political circles to arrive at a consensus, citing precedents like Bihar-Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh and UP-Uttarakhand, failed.

TS will be the loser

Interestingly, Telangana stands to lose more than it gains, considering the heavy movement of trucks from Karimnagar carrying granite to Krishnapatnam Port, iron ore to Visakhapatnam, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and heavy engineering equipment, plastic and pharma ingredients which go out of Telangana. Transport vehicles coming into Telangana bring milk, fruits, vegetables and rice from different parts of AP. These apart, limestone for all the cement plants in Telangana comes from AP, a move that would mean cement becoming costlier. When asked, a senior officer in the AP government said once the MV tax for vehicles coming to A.P. was imposed, it would mean revenue of just about Rs. 5 crore a month or Rs. 60 crore a year. “But if we do not impose MV tax, we stand to lose about Rs. 480 crore a year because the transport sector from places like Vijayawada and other hubs in A.P. will shift base to Telangana,” he said. The G.O. is likely to be issued on Thursday.
