Is there any special quota for big companies? I got a Full Time Offer from a start-up in US. I'm in the final year of my B.Tech and the programme ends in mid-may. The company's HR is asking for a certificate which says that I have completed the programme requirements by April 1st saying that the we need to apply for visa on April 1st. Quora cancelled interviews with a friend of mine when he said that he will not get his provisional degree before mid may. But my friends who got offers from google(US) and microsoft (US) are not said so. They are told that they can apply for visa in May and there will be no pains. Is there any special quota for big companies? How does the process work? When is the quota expected to finish this year? Any links to authentic sources would be of great help. 2 Answers Ram Parthasarathy, Software Engineer at Monetate. I work... There is no special quota for big companies. The visas are issued on a first come first served basis. An additional 20000 visas are available for people who graduated with an advanced degree in the US. That is the only 'quota' when it comes to H1B. The H1B visa mandates that the job should be relevant to the candidate's expertise and it requires at least a Bachelor's degree. The degree certificate or some kind of proof is needed while filing for the visa. Last year the quota was reached on June 11th. Although, it is hard to predict, this year it is expected to be sooner than that. If i had to take a rough guess, i would say it wouldn't even touch June this year. Most people will be ready with all the documents and will apply the moment it opens on April 1st. Applying in the first two weeks of May might be fine but it is definitely a risk. Microsoft and Google will generally place their candidates in their Vancouver office if they aren't able to get the H1B. They will move them to Redmond/MountainView the next year if they miss it this year. On the other hand, Quora and other startups cannot take that risk. If they know that there is uncertainty that the candidate won't be able to get a visa, they might as well stop wasting their time and money in interviewing him/her. The key is to file as early as possible and get the notification of receipt. Even if you are missing some documents, you can submit it later. The USCIS will send a RFE (Request for Evidence) if they need more documentation and will give you adequate time to submit the missing documents. This is pretty common if the sponsoring company is not very well known.
