Malli Mastan Babu 

 

 

 

Born in a humble background from Nellore, Malli Mastan Babu's life journey is nothing short of a miracle. He lived his life with indomitable spirit and courage against overwhelming odds. A brilliant student from his school days in Sainik School, he was drawn to mountaineering by his boyhood hero Uday Bhaskar Rao. Malli is an alumnus of NIT, IIT and IIM and worked in Satyam Computers as a software engineer for 3 years. He could have climbed the corporate ladder with all his technical skills and management degrees, but he chose to climb the mountains instead.

Malli was the 1st South Asian to summit the highest peak in each of the seven continents which is a world record. He was also the 1st South Asian to reach the summit of the highest peak in 9 out of 12 countries in the South American continent. He trekked from Everest to Kanchenjunga, covering nearly 1200 km of the world's highest terrain in less than 100 days which is considered a mind-boggling achievement for any mountaineer. A life-time adventurer, he was also a motivational speaker who shared his life experiences to help others. He organized trips for several peaks and conducted introductory adventure programs for kids. He founded IIMC’s Adventure Club "Armageddon" in 2003 to encourage his fellow students to be more fit and to support aspiring adventurers. Widely known as world’s fastest summiteer, Malli once remarked on his choice of going on solo expeditions ”because it would be difficult for other climbers and trekkers to match my pace."

Malli's inspirational journey came to grinding halt at Andes in Argentina on 24th March 2015. He found peace doing what he loved the most. One of his tributes said “Mountains retained its favorite child. R.I.P Malli Mastan Babu.” We couldn’t agree more. It is both sad and true that such a inspirational mountaineer who bought a lot of honor to India didn’t receive much recognition from the government.

We salute the guts and courage of this national hero for being a pioneer and guiding light to other mountaineers. We bow to this man who exemplified the human spirit of courage. We take immense pride to recognize him as one of the sons of our land. He pursued his passion and took the path less travelled, and that has made all the difference. A true legend, we are proud of you, Sir!
