I Am A 'hindu-Muslim': Salman Khan To Court

Bollywood cinestar Salman Khan appeared to be demonstrating his acting skills before a trial court at Jodhpur on Wednesday when the presiding officer queried about his caste. Salman replied it was "Indian". On being reminded that Indian cannot be a caste, the actor said it was "Hindu-Muslim". When asked to explain, Salman said: "My mother is a Hindu and my father is a Muslim." The Bollywood star was before the trial court to record his statements on charges that he illegally used firearms during the infamous black buck shooting case of 1998. Blackbuck is a protected animal.



Before the charges were read out to him, the court followed the routine procedure of establishing his identity by asking him questions like what his name, caste and profession were. The film star pleaded innocence before chief judicial magistrate Anupama Bijlani and sought time to reply to the charges. "The court gave us time to present our side on May 4," the actor's counsel H M Saraswat said.

The state forest department registered a case against Salman under the Arms Act on the ground that the arms licence that the actor used for alleged poaching of Blackbucks had expired. The actor, therefore, was guilty of using the arms illegally when the shooting incident occurred. The alleged poaching took place at village Kankani near Jodhpur on the intervening night of October 1 and 2 in 1998.

Last week on April 23, the chief judicial magistrate accepted an application moved by Salman's counsel seeking exemption from his appearance in the court on grounds of ill health and asked him to appear April 29, 2015 to record the statements. An unusually large crowd had turned out to see the film star at the court premises. The actor landed at Jodhpur in a chartered plane around 9:30 am and reached the court around 10 am. Salman was accompanied by bodyguard Shera and sister Alvira. One of the actor's bouncers had an argument with the policemen at the entrance of the court when the latter tried to stop him from entering the courtroom.
