vatchesa Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 An unmanned Russian cargo spacecraft is plunging back to Earth after apparently the mission team lost control. Here’s what we know so far: The Russian space agency is trying to re-establish contact with the cargo vessel as it hurtles over ground stations, but is struggling because the 2.5 tonne spacecraft is tumbling The ship had been scheduled to dock with the ISS, where the international crew of six people is awaiting the cargo, on 30 April The spacecraft is carrying 6,000 pounds or 2721.5 kg of food, fuel and materials for scientific experiments for the crew at the International Space Station (ISS) But the failed attempt will not put the six ISS crew members at risk. “The astronauts have plenty of provisions, enough to last months,” NASA said The station’s current Expedition 43 crew includes three Russians, two Americans and one Italian astronaut A statement released overnight by the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC) in the US says the Progress 59 spacecraft is rotating at a rate of 360 degrees every five seconds US space agency Nasa last provided an update at 4am UK time explaining that Russian flight controllers were continuing attempts to communicate with the Progress 59 cargo spacecraft Progress 59 can be tracked using satellite monitoring tools online including Satflare and NY2O. It is travelling at 4.64 miles per second – or nearly 17,000mph. This would be an uncontrolled re-entry, so some pieces could make it to land. But the danger to people is very slim. More than two-thirds of Earth are covered in water and only about 3% of the land is occupied by urban areas. Chances of some pieces coming down all the way to land without getting burned up in the atmosphere and causing damage are very low say scientists.
