Some interesting facts about Vizag(The Jewel of the East Coast and City of Destiny): 

1. After India's independence it was the largest district in the country, and was subsequently divided into the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam 
2. In last two decades, population increased 3 times. 
3. Literacy Rate 82.66% 
4. Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC) is the only pharmaceutical SEZ in India, with 58 pharmaceutical companies including PharmaZell of Germany and Eisai Pharma of Japan. 
5. The steelplant had revenues of INR144570 million (US$2 billion) for 2011-2012 and has about 17,800 employees. 
6. IT revenue - 1445 cr and IT employees count 16998 
7. Visakhapatnam was one of five sites in the country selected to hold strategic crude-oil reserves in case of a national emergency. IOC and BPCL have their bottling units in the city 
8. Simhadri Super Thermal Power Plant of NTPC Limited is expanding from 1,000 to 2,000 MW at a cost of INR50 billion (US$840 million). Hindujas has begun construction of a 1,070-MW thermal power plant in Visakhapatnam district at a cost of INR70 billion (US$1 billion). 
9. India's first rare earths (minerals) extraction plant at Atchutapuram is owned by Toyotsu Rare Earth India Ltd. (Partners of Toyota). 
10. Established in 1878, A.V.N. College is one of the city's oldest educational institutions.[32] Visakhapatnam is also home to Andhra University (AU), established in 1926. President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was vice chancellor of the university between 1931 and 1936.

12. A new base at INS Rambilli is being built on 5,000 acres (20 km2) with an investment of INR15 billion (US$252 million), as the first dedicated submarine base in India. India's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant was launched in the Naval Dockyard, and Bharat Dynamics has begun manufacturing torpedoes. 
13. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) plans its second research facility in the country (after Trombay) in the area. A permanent facility, which will include a school dedicated to nuclear-power technology. There are also offices of the National Institute of Oceanography and the India Meteorological Department. 
14. There are more than 50 engineering colleges in Visakhapatnam. Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University gained National Law University status in 2008. St. Aloysius Anglo-Indian High School is the oldest high school in the district and one of the oldest schools in the country. It was established in 1847, and is in the old town. St. Joseph's Girls' High School was established in 1893 in Waltair and is an ICSE school. The city has about 10 Kendriya Vidyalayas.

16. Vizag port is deepest land-locked and protected port and it is Second largest port by volume of cargo handled. Visakhapatnam Port is undergoing a modernisation and expansion program aimed at increasing its capacity to 130 million tonnes by 2016-17, entailing an investment of INR13,000 crores. 
17. Vizag railway division is the fourth highest revenue earner among the 70 railway divisions in India. Waltair division owned huge tracts of land running into 880 acres, including 250 acres of vacant land, adjacent to the Vizag Railway Station as against the 150 acres and 28 acres owned by the railways in Vijayawada and Guntur respectively. 
18. The Visakhapatnam customs house expects a revenue of Rs. 17,000 crore during the current financial year (customs duty, excise duty plus service tax collections) 
19. Visakha has rich history dated back to 260 BC.
