Yes you can get Cap Gap but better to apply for OPT extension, lets say in case H1 reject aithe?(you never know). So best option is to apply for OPT extension

Spartan Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 OPT Extension compulsory ga apply cheyali... or else CAP-GAP anedi activate avvadu.. incase extension apply cheyakapote..only 60days grace period activate avutadi..without work authorization.. appudu malli u cannot work until ur H1 starts.....so make sure u apply the extension... ========================================================= Who is eligible? The cap-gap extension of status applies to all F-1 students in all fields of study with pending H-1B petitions (whether the 12 month card or STEM extension) during the current fiscal year. For employment authorization to be extended during the cap-gap, the student must have an approved period of post-completion or 17 month extension with a future OPT end date., i.e., the OPT end date must always be AFTER the date the H-1B petition was filed. A student who does not have post-completion OPT or 17-month extension, or whose post-completion OPT or 17-month extension has expired before the H-1B petition was filed, will have the duration of status extended as a grace period for 60 days, but will not have cap-gap work authorization.

Above statement clearly says that you just have to file for h1 before your opt ends in order for your cap gap to cover.. Sorry if I Mis guided But I also said to check with university, each and every university will have a legal team who advice on such things for international students.
