Spartan Posted May 7, 2015 Report Posted May 7, 2015 Uber wants to buy another mapping technology: Nokia's Here, and it's bid $3 billion for it according to The New York Times. Who else wants in on the action? Apparently a handful of German car manufacturers including Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz, and Chinese search engine Baidu's lending some cash to the move as well. While Google Maps is probably the most popular service here in the States, that isn't exactly the case abroad. NYT says that globally the Finnish electronics company's navigation system commands an 80 percent market share for in-car GPS. From the sounds of it, the reason Uber's even interested is that Here could aid Uber Pool's car-pooling to link passengers with drivers. The trio from Deutschland's intentions are a little clearer: the idea is to aid in the development and guidance of autonomous vehicles because leaning heavily on Google isn't particularly attractive given Mountain View's own self-driving car efforts. That, and if those three own Here they can charge licensing fees should they choose to let other companies use it.

athletics Posted May 7, 2015 Report Posted May 7, 2015 yup Nokia rocks.. google navigation kanna munde 2007 lo Nokia Ovi maps racha unde..that too in India.. It was because of their navteq acquisition, even google maps is a start up, map quest and yahoo maps both had navteq back end but eventually lost to google maps because of better integration and mobile support
athletics Posted May 7, 2015 Report Posted May 7, 2015 hmmm 8 billions ippudu 3 ayinaya :O lol nokia gadu e microsoft tho edo laluchi paddi andriod smart phones cheyala debbaki kinda ki poyadu 2006-2010 time lo maps software was selling crazy good, thankgiving ki almost everyone had a GPS on their buying list, even garmin stock was trading something like $120+ at that time and after that phase it fell to $20 but they survived as they divested in to fitness and commercial GPS but most vanished. Only reason I think uber is ready to spent 3 billion is that it wants to do something innovative apart for the licensing fees it earns (navteq still licenses the maps to 80% commercially available GPS software including garmin, TomTom etc)
