athletics Posted May 12, 2015 Report Posted May 12, 2015 you want state govts to compete for the 'pie'? anyway my point was entirely different. bangalore is awesome because of the startups coming out of it, inspite of the irritating smugness of the people from there. Other startup cities are Mumbai, Delhi. Chennai is not a startup city, but still chennaiites don't actually have to go to Bangalore if they want to set up a startup. eg. Zoho, freshdesk, and a lot more. Hyd?? it matters zilch, which company choses to set up its headquarters where. It only means that the state govt leaders (KCR, KTR) were as pliant as CBN was when Microsoft was invited. you are talkng of 13k jobs, and I'm talking of big ideas. until those big ideas come from Hyd, Hyd brand is only about charminar and its biriyani. Not high tech. Startups will not happen overnight, startups will be not be born out of nowhere but they are born out of industry usecases, as long you don't have that industry ecosystem (research edusation - classical examples are Boston and Bayarea) the startup culture will not exist. The engineer who having seen a problem will work with like minded people to solve a particular usecase and thus a startup is born. Hence bangalore has a head start but Hyd is slowly getting there.

lazybugger Posted May 12, 2015 Report Posted May 12, 2015 but it needs to begin somewhere, efforts are being made by the TS governent to encourage the startup cuture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yOSBbxK_zY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xAsxOuHsBg okay nice. It still has to produce some startups with upwards of $100m valuations, before Hyd can become a tech hub.

Hyd is not even trying. Yet. You yourself said that some $10B in software exports. I'm not sure of numbers, but cities with less of software exports have higher incidence of startups. eg. chennai, pune, gurgaon, etc. I think quillpad or something similar was born in Hyd, but moved to bangalore. and there was this linux tablet, when the first ipad was released. That company also moved to Bangalore. two examples of what hyd lacks. not engineering talent, but an ecosystem to nurture startups. setting up google hq may change it. but you'll have to wait for a while before announcing hyd's arrival. Given what happened after Microsoft's arrival. I expect something similar now. Hyd will become the hub for cloud infra companies, probably. nothing more.

University of Hyderabad is the Jewel in modern Hyderabad's crown. State govt should have set up an incubator affiliated to it, giving the university complete autonomy in running it. It could've rivaled Mumbai, Madras IIT's incubator spaces.

Even before Modi announced 10k crores for startups TS government said they have commited 1k crores towardz encouraging startups and even said they will partner to fund the startup. They hace patterned with industry and premier institutes around hyd and even providing the mentorship apart from the infrastructure. I visit this startup page of hyd and it is very active with the news about startups in hydhttp://startuphyderabad.com/

I visit this startup page of hyd and it is very active with the news about startups in hydhttp://startuphyderabad.com/ why do you care about what politicians announce? How different is this 'encouraging startups' from giving preferential access loans to small businesses? Do you think politicians and bureaucrats can understand the need of high growth startups? I haven't heard of any companies from state govt funded incubators making it to the big league. I can say that Hyd isn't trying, because there has been no big names from Hyderabad yet. even after the couple of decades of large growth in software companies in that area. may be you should wait for Hyderabad to reach an inflection point, before comparing it to better cities in India.

But they take the easiest route (smartly). Suppose an investor comes and asks to set up their HQ in Bangalore, they will. This may be because of many other reasons, like lack of customer base in Hyd. Telugu people may be awesome. but Hyd itself is quite mediocre. atleast for now.
