As i know Governments are not directly going to the startups but investing in the venture companies who have the knowledge and experience. Even companies like Google and mixrosoft does that, they have venture funds/companies and work independently. For example Yahoo venture funded google when it was a startup and yahoo Japan funded alibaba etc..

simple man. govts cannot pick winners. They suck at it.

google HQ may help Hyderabad come up with some exciting startups. But Hyd is way behind other cities right now.

Governments knows that very well and hence they don't want to be the choosers, they are just putting the seed money into the hands of the people who does that best. Its like you can't have the cake and eat it too.

Not all cities but may be Bangalore.

so who does it best, do you think? the investors? Nobody can do it man. Its upto the company to grow, and others to place bets on it. Its completely pointless for a govt to involve itself in it.

like I said, the best place to set up an incubator in Hyd is the University of Hyderabad, giving the university complete autonomy and a set budget per year.

a state govt based incubator will go nowhere. How will it work? Govt sets up the building and invites investors to set up offices? and then what? The investors can't set up offices in regular residential buildings? ah, the incubation space. Its not that expensive to set up an office in India, so why exactly is the need for incubation space, when someone can hire a 300sft office at less than 7000rs a month.

unless some sort of manufacturing expertise is being provided at govt's expense, it makes no sense for govts to involve themselves in this. ofcourse, CBN's similar proposal in Vizag will also be a nonstarter.

chennai may be boring. but its the decent Indian city, that doesn't delude itself into believing that it has arrived.

for a city of Hyd's size, and revenues, Hyd is quite mediocre.

for eg. why did Phanindra Sama move Redbus to Bangalore, if Hyd is such a hotshot city?

More funny is the case of kerala. Which tried exactly this few years back. with a govt incubator in Trivandrum, and a private one by one of those infosys founders in Kochi.

there was a flurry of activity for a couple of years, mostly on gesture based technologies. But none of the startups went anywhere.

Mumbai is the baap of all cities in India, in this aspect.
