Sikkim is a small state with big dreams. While the country mostly ignores it, the state has been working quietly towards its goals. If you ask us, we'd say it is the best state in India right now. Here's what makes it special :

- The state is into 100 % organic farming. The Government of Sikkim stepped into Organic Mission process from 2003, the year when it stopped imports of chemical fertilizers in the State. Since then the cultivatable land in Sikkim are practically organic and also farmers of Sikkim are traditional users of organic manure.

- Green mission. Just before the onset of monsoons, people from all walks of life gather and undertake plantation drives.Saplings of fruit bearing tree species and ornamental flowering species in lakhs have been planted across the State. The mission engages every Sikkimese in avenue plantation and beautification of all vacant and waste lands asserting the international recognition of Sikkim as an incomparable green state.

- 100 % housing. Sikkim is the first Kutcha House-Free State in the country. Every family in Sikkim has a permanent, safe roof over their head.

- India’s first cyber village, has been set up at Melli Dara Paiyong in South Sikkim .Each of the six ward panchayat is provided with the handheld devices to collect and update data of the villagers. Each resident has his or her exclusive digital profile in the handheld device. Data generated are used for multiple purposes including police verification and monitoring of benefits provided by the government to the villagers.

- ‘Ten Minutes to Earth’ remains unmatched in the world. Six lakh saplings of trees and flowering species are planted within 10 minutes across Sikkim every monsoon since 2009! This will help in sequestering of 1400 tons of carbon dioxide annually!

- First State to reach healthcare at people’s doorsteps In another innovative healthcare mission, Sikkim became the first State in the country to introduce the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Annual and Total Check-up for Healthy Sikkim (CATCH) campaign. The campaign aims to make Sikkim the healthiest State in the country by the end of this year. It is a first of its kind public healthcare initiative in the country.

- The Siddeshwara Dham is popularly known as Chaar Dham as it is ornamented by exact replicas of four Dhaams, Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri and Rameshwaram, of the country. This concept of four Dhams within the same premises is found nowhere in the world. The Union government endorsed this project with a National tourism award under the ‘Most Unique and Innovative’ category to Government of Sikkim in 2012.

- Sikkim is the first State in the country to allocate 30 percent of its Annual Plan in education sector since 1994.

- Sikkim has a literacy rate of 82.2 per cent, compared to 68.81 per cent in 2001. The state, which has three-quarter of its people in villages, has a rural literacy rate of 79.82 per cent, higher than the national rural literacy of 68.91 per cent. Every village in Sikkim has a school within walking distance providing quality education.

- Sikkim has been declared a fully electrified state. Sikkim is also well on its way to tap the 8,000 MW potential of its swift mountain streams. The state is targeting revenues of Rs.1,000 crore every year from sale of electricity.

- The road network in Sikkim is also the envy of most states. It has 1,747 km of roads, of which just 178 km constitute state highways. That means that a vast portion of the new roads crisscross the interiors of the state. More importantly, only 460 km are earthen, the rest are pucca black-top and macadam stretches.

- Sikkim has won several awards for the cleanest state in India.

- The man behind all this, is Pawan Kumar Chamling. He himself is from a village and understands rural poverty. He travels to the remotest hamlet, sometimes on foot, to listen to people and explain his policies. There is constant dialogue between the Chief Minister and them.

- He is the only chief minister of India who has governed a state four terms in a row, with his party Sikkim Democratic Front winning the 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 Sikkim legislative assembly elections. His party first came to power in Sikkim after winning the 1994 assembly elections. His popularity kept soaring in Sikkim due to his developmental work and for maintaining peace. In 2009, his party SDF won all 32 assembly seats in Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
