no. some OBC caste. MGR is definitely uppercaste. Its easy to diss a dalit in tamil movies these days. That is what the documentary is about.

 

It's about how some castes are showed as having lots of great history and power (similar to Indra sena reddy, Narasimha Naidu), and are picked up by young adults watching it. Especially at colleges where dalits face extreme discrimination because of the crap these movies feed the upper castes.

 

One of the dalit in that documentary specifically says that he doesn't like Ilayaraja (who's a dalit), because he made too many songs praising Thevars - who suppress dalits in their village. Though he likes Ilayaraja's music, he can never respect him as a person, he says.

To succeed as a lowercaste guy, you should be beyond excellent.

 

I don't know if top stars are all upper/middle stars. They may well be. I won't be surprised at all.

aa cinemaa is the best example. The movie is completely about urban dalit politics. The hero is a smart dalit, working a top job, has a beautiful gf, and wins in the end.

 

But the film doesn't use the word 'dalit' in even one scene. Nobody is prepared to use the word yet, even in TN. nobody willing to identify and glorify dalits. Whereas, they have no problems glorifying thevars (Thevar Magan - with an entire song praising Thevars), and such similar castes.
