How many of us know and appreciate the contributions of our spies? Their efforts are hidden from the public eye due to security concerns, but they still sacrifice themselves to make sure our country is secure from external threats.

Meet Ravinder Kaushik a.k.a Black Tiger, a RAW agent who served the country selflessly for 30 years on a foreign soil in the harshest of circumstances. Born on 11th April, 1952, he was raised in Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan. He grew up to be a fine theatre artist and a patriot. His amazing acting skills impressed RAW officials.

At the age of 23, he was inducted into RAW and sent to Pakistan as an undercover agent. He was converted into a muslim and given the name of Nabi Ahmed Shakir. He enrolled in Karachi University and after completing his LLB, joined Pakistan Army as a commissioned officer, who was later promoted to the rank of a Major. He later married a girl and had a son with her. As Pakistan planned to wage war, Kaushik’s role became crucial and he played it perfectly. During his years of service, he passed on valuable information that helped India to remain a step ahead of their neighbour at all times.

In 1983, RAW sent another agent to get in touch with Kaushik, but he was caught by Pakistani Intelligence and resulted in Kaushik's arrest. He was tortured for two years during interrogation after which he was sentenced to imprisonment for life. In 2001, after spending 16 years in jail in disappointment about his own nation leaving him for dead, he died of tuberculosis and heart diseases.

Governments over the years have claimed that we should honour such heroes of our nation while they constantly ignore the contributions of these martyrs. All Kaushik got for serving his nation selflessly was negligence from the government, absolutely no recognition after he died, and a mere Rs. 2000 for his family.

His family does not want money. What they want is recognition of the contribution by our intelligence agents as they are the real foundation of the security system.
