Exactly a year ago, the state of Telangana was carved out of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh. A state that was formed out of a movement to stop tyranny, a movement for self respect, a movement for self rule, is celebrating its first anniversary.
A man centre to this movement who has championed the cause for the last 13 years, K Chadrashekar Rao, has been given a clear mandate to fulfil the aspirations of the people of the state. And, in a few hours from now, the champion of the youngest state of India completes his one year in office.
As the government and the people are celebrating the first anniversary, here is a list of five initiatives of the Telangana government that, I feel, are fulfilling the aspirations of the people.

Aasara Pensions - The biggest social security scheme for the old and disabled

Aasara Pensions Scheme serves about 35,86,598 people across the state of Telangana. It is one of the biggest social security schemes for the old and the disabled. The scheme provides for people under six categories - old aged, widows, disabled, weavers, toddy tappers and Beedi workers. The pension amount, which was around Rs. 200-500, has been increased to Rs. 1000-1500.

More than 300 crores of pension is being delivered to pensioners every month.

Mission Kakatiya

Tanks are the primary source of irrigation for the farmers of Telangana. Carrying the legacy of the Kakatiya dynasty, known for their dexterity in building and maintaining tanks, the Telangana government is trying to improve the condition of tanks in the villages.
In its efforts to improve the irrigation facilities in Telangana, the KCR government has started Mission Kakatiya, which basically helps in removing the silt from the tanks and also increasing the water restoration capacity of the land, thus contributing to rural poverty alleviation and employment generation.

T Harish Rao, the man behind Mission Kakatiya, is going all guns blazing to complete phase I of the project and transfer the benefits of the scheme to the people.

Power generation

Scheduled power cuts in the capital city of Hyderabad were a norm until last year. Industries were given power holidays once a week. Even before the formation of the state, KCR has been explaining about the situation of the power generation in the state to every stakeholder, and has vowed to end darkness in Telangana in the next 3 years. One year on, today, we do not hear of scheduled power cuts in Hyderabad.

KCR's plan to use Public Sector Undertaking companies for power generation has also been lauded by many. With the current projects, he is moving in the right direction to make Telangana a power surplus state in the next 3 years.

Water Grid

KCR's grand plan of supplying clean drinking water to every household is being championed by his son KT Rama Rao (KTR). The water grid is being built at a cost of 25000 crores, to supply about 160 TMC of water drawn from the two prominent rivers Krishna and Godavari that flow through the state. If implemented in true spirit, this project would solve the drinking water problem of the people in rural areas, particularly Nalgonda, who are the worst hit by Fluorosis.

Cancelling affiliations of Engineering Colleges

Engineering colleges have cropped up from every corner of the city in the last decade. Poultry and Cattle farms that were surrounding the city were turned into engineering colleges. These colleges do not have enough infrastructure to impart technical education to the thousands of students who join them. Moreover, many of the newly formed engineering colleges have been running them just because of the fees reimbursement program of the government. After taking charge, KCR has vowed to end this plight of engineers coming out of these colleges.
In a first, he cancelled affiliations of 173 engineering colleges after finding that these colleges do not have enough staff and infrastructure.
