500 Medicine Shops to be Closed in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Nearly 500 medicine shops are likely to be shut down for 10 days from Friday following a major crackdown by the Drug Control Administration. These shops were found selling Schedule-H and H1 drugs to customers without checking prescription.

“Indiscriminate consumption of Schedule H, and H1, drugs, leads to drug reactions, and health complications. Self-medication, and incorrect-medication, is a major problem,” said Akun Sabharwal, director, DCA, under whose order the whole operation was carried out.

The two-day operation began with a shuffling of drug inspectors and Assistant Directors to change their jurisdictions. Then the officials were asked to pose as customers, and buy medicines. Action is being taken against stores which were found committing the violations.

Indiscriminate consumption of powerful drugs can lead to health complications. It is also stated to be the reason for development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Antibiotics, drugs used to treat blood pressure, cardiac problems, fall under Schedule-H. Cough syrup addiction is also linked to unchecked sale of over-the-counter medicines.

Another official said, “Let’s say a patient uses a Schedule-H drug without consulting a doctor. If he is afflicted by the same health ailment later, the drug will not be effective. A higher dosage will have to be taken, which will be costly.”

The WHO has warned that without urgent action against indiscriminate sale and use of of drugs, even common infections and minor injuries can prove fatal.

Not many here understand how serious issue it is? Esp issusing medicines like antibiotics without prescription.. You need professional advice and should continue the full course if not then you are inviting trouble.

Also In India I have seen people walking up to the medical store and ask the shopkeeper (these people are not even qualified pharmacists) to suggest a medicine for their symptoms which they happyly oblige and play with ones life.
