simplee Posted June 14, 2015 Report Posted June 14, 2015 Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has done this first in the entire country - to levy streetlight tax on its citizens. In what can be said as bizzarre move the government cleared the proposal wherein residents of the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh state will soon be shelling out for street-lighting too as streetlight tax. The 'streetlight tax' will form a part of property tax notice that is served on people of the state. Each house will need to pay Rs 50 to Rs 100 as 'streetlight tax' per year based on the total amount of the owner's property tax. This was proposed after the power utilities supplied 313.12 million units for lighting up the streets of Andhra drew a bill of Rs 170.81 crore in the 2014-15 fiscal. Against this, government got only Rs 5.46 crores as payment from the users. Now a total population of 4.8 crores will have to pay 'streetlight tax'. Orders to this effect will be served in the coming week and collection of tax will start from July 2015. Guess there is no government that is brainstorming on decreasing taxes by improving efficiency as well as reducing graft in India. Way to go CBN!
