Roger Federer, Andy Murray coast into 3rd round at Wimbledon

With a vintage performance punctuated by a spectacular trick shot, Roger Federer looked as good as ever on the grass-courts of Wimbledon.

Federer beat Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round on Thursday and pulled off arguably the shot of the tournament so far in the second set -- a between-the-legs lob that helped him break for a 5-2 lead.

The seven-time champion struggled with Querrey's serve in the first set before breaking for a 5-4 lead, and then dominated the last two sets.

Federer will be joined in the third round by Andy Murray, whose 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 victory over an ineffective Robin Haase of the Netherlands on Court 1 was more like a workout than a Grand Slam match.

Bidding for his second Wimbledon title in three years, the third-seeded Murray was barely tested as it took only 1 hour, 27 minutes to dispatch the 28th-ranked Haase, who beat him on a hard court in Rotterdam in 2008 but never mounted a serious challenge Thursday.

Murray, who became the first homegrown men's champion in 77 years when he won Wimbledon in 2013, is setting himself up for another serious title run this year.

"It was a good match from start to finish for me and obviously getting the early lead helped," Murray said. "I was very happy with the way that I played."

Haase held at love in the first game, then didn't win another in that set as Murray took 17 of the last 19 points, including 13 in a row in one stretch. Murray won nine games in a row overall to go up 3-0 in the second and take complete control.

Murray played a solid all-court match, with 25 winners, five aces and 11 unforced errors. He broke six times and saved the only break point he faced. Haase was erratic and had numerous mishits, finishing with 27 unforced errors, to 19 winners.

Out of desperation, on one point in the third set, Haase ran right toward Murray as he prepared to hit an overhead smash, then ducked away at the last second as the Briton drilled the ball down the middle.

Another British player, James Ward, joined Murray in the third round, beating Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3. It's the first time since 2002 that two British men have gone past the second round at Wimbledon.

After the hottest day on record in Wimbledon history on Wednesday, temperatures were cooler and a light drizzle forced a 45-minute delay to the start of play on the outside courts.

6 EPIC MATCHES IN SERENA WILLIAMS-VICTORIA AZARENKA RIVALRY

They're back at it. Serena Williams vs. Victoria Azarenka has been one of the most compelling rivalries in women's tennis over the past five years.

Williams holds a commanding 16-3 record in the head-to-head showdowns, including 2-0 at Wimbledon, but rest assured the wins haven't come easily.

Before their quarterfinal showdown at the All England Club on Tuesday, we rewind six memorable matches between Williams and Azarenka.

2010 Australian Open quarterfinals

Azarenka had the top-seeded Williams on the ropes in the 2010 Aussie Open quarterfinals but never delivered the knockout. The seventh-seeded Azarenka won the first set 6-4 over the reigning champion and was up 4-0 in the second. But then things changed. Williams -- who said she started thinking about booking a flight home -- stormed back and ended up with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory. Williams would go on to beat Li Na in the semifinals and Justine Henin in the final to win her fifth Aussie Open and her 12th Grand Slam overall, which tied her with Billie Jean King. Azarenka would go on to win two Aussie Open titles of her own, in 2012 and 2013.

Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams took the US Open women's final to a third set for the first time since 1995.
Azarenka was two points away from the title, and then Williams cut in. "I honestly can't believe I won," Williams said after the 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory that clinched her 15th Grand Slam title. "I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, 'Man, she's playing so great.' I'm really shocked." Azarenka was up 5-3 in the third set, but Williams regained her composure and Azarenka -- who was playing in her second Grand Slam final -- lost a bit of focus. "Being so close, it hurts deeply," Azarenka said. "To know you don't have it. You're close; you didn't get it."

Victoria Azarenka has spent a total of 51 weeks at No. 1 in her career.
Top-seeded and defending champion Azarenka, fresh off her second consecutive Australian Open title, claimed yet another trophy with a 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Williams in the final on the hard courts of Doha. But even then, it was Williams who was the big winner. In an odd twist, Williams took over the No. 1 ranking in the world from Azarenka the very next day. And she hasn't budged since. The streak is at 118 weeks and counting. "I'm definitely not happy," Williams said after the match. "But I'm No. 1."

Serena Williams won a total of $3.6 million for her win over Victoria Azarenka at the 2013 US Open.
Back for an encore in New York, Williams and Azarenka put on another dramatic finale. But once again, it was Williams who was bowing to the crowd after her 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 victory. "From the first point, the tension, the battle, the determination," Azarenka said after the 2-hour, 45-minute classic. "It was ... kind of like boiling the water or something." For Williams, it was her fifth US Open title and 17th major overall. With the win, Williams became the first woman to surpass $9 million in prize money for a single season and the first to win $50 million in her career. Since then, Serena has tacked on another several million and her career prize money coming into the 2015 French Open was listed at $67,527,669.

Victoria Azarenka was in a winning position until the very end of the nearly 3-hour match.
Crumble. Crumble. Crumble. Looking to hand Williams her first loss of the 2015 season, Azarenka was up 6-5, 40-love -- three match points on her serve. After the next two points went Williams' way, the rest was almost too painful to watch. Three straight Azarenka double faults pulled Williams even. She then dominated the tiebreaker and posted a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (1) win. "I wouldn't say I let myself down," Azarenka said. "Just sometimes it doesn't go your way."

In a match full of emotional swings, Serena Williams was the one celebrating at then end.
Once again, Azarenka was having her way with the No. 1 player in the world. And then she wasn't. Down a set but well ahead in the cursing department, Williams staged a remarkable comeback at Roland Garros. Williams won the final six games and 10 of the last 12 to post a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. "She really stepped it up," Azarenka said. "Nobody is probably harder ... for me to play against." Williams went on to win the French Open, her 20th Grand Slam title overall.
