JANASENA Posted July 1, 2015 Report Posted July 1, 2015 New Delhi, July 01: It was evident that the Indian Mujahideen (IM) had attempted to target Narendra Modi at the Patna rally during the Lok Sabha election campaign. However, what the IM had planned did not quite materialise and hence they settled for planting bombs all over the venue with the hope that they would get their target. NIA officials probing the case say that the original plan was to send in a suicide bomber. They had sourced a jacket and wanted to plant bombs within it and ensure that it triggered off as they approached Modi who was then running for the post of Prime Minister of India. The IM had put together two plots to assassinate Modi – but both failed to take off. Modi on his arrival at Patna was meant to stop at a hotel for a brief time and then proceed towards the Gandhi Maidan where he was to address the rally. The IM had initially planned to rope in a sharp shooter for assassinating Modi. The IM ran into two problems on this issue. Firstly, they did not manage to find anyone suitable for the job. The other plan was to execute shooting at a very close range. However that plan too was scrapped as they realized that there would be too much security cover around Modi at that time. The next plan that they had thought was about a suicide bomber. They had even done a dry run and had drawn inspiration from the LTTE which had mastered the art of suicide bombings. They had plans of planting high powered explosives into a jacket and go to the hotel where Modi was staying. The plan was to trigger off the explosions. However, this plan was also scrapped as the IM had a plan on hand, but failed to get anyone to execute the job. The final plan that they drew out was to plant as many bombs as possible in and around the Gandhi Maidan with the hope that they would get their target. Tehsin Akthar, one of the members who was part of the plot said that the IM was extremely disappointed with the manner in which the attack was executed. He said that it was a failed plot. They wanted to send across a strong message but had failed miserably.
