Nidhi Parekh then locked herself in her Chevy and cops had to call a local key-maker to get her out.

A woman driving drunk early on Tuesday morning rammed her Chevrolet into a tea stall and then hit a car and a parked auto on Carter Road in Bandra, injuring the tea vendor seriously.

The woman, identified by cops as Nidhi Parekh, a chief fashion coordinator with designer Kristy De Cunha, locked herself in the car for nearly an hour after the accident and could be brought out only after a key-maker was brought to the scene by the cops.

This is the second case of a woman locking herself up in a car to avoid arrest in the city in less than a month and yet another in a series of drink-and-drive cases involving women.

A woman had similarly locked herself in her car in Worli after being caught driving drunk through a nakabandi last month.

The horrifying accident involving corporate lawyer Janhavi Gadkar, who drove on the wrong side of Eastern Freeway after downing drinks at two different restaurants and rammed her Audi into a taxi killing two men, is still fresh in the city's memory.

Nidhi, 25, a resident of Gujrati Colony, Vile Parle (east), was returning from a friend's birthday party when she lost control over the car at around 2.30 am on Carter Road. She first hit a tea stall, injuring its owner Vijay Sahani, 38, before her car careened into a parked auto and then came to rest after hitting a red Santro, which too was unoccupied.

As a crowd gathered, Nidhi rolled up the windows and locked the car. When cops arrived around 2.45 am, some people had already rushed the injured tea stall owner to Bhabha Hospital and Nidhi was still inside the car. She was repeatedly heard asking people to give her way so she could go home.

When she ignored the cops' requests to open the car, some women constables were called to the scene. The women constables' attempts to get Nidhi out of the car also failed and finally the cops called a local key-maker to open the car. The key-maker managed to open the car around 3.30 am and Nidhi was taken to Cooper Hospital for a test, which revealed that quantity of alcohol in blood was way above the permissible level. Nidhi was later allowed to go home because laws do not allow cops to arrest women late in the night. Nidhi returned to the police station later in the day and was arrested for rash and negligent driving. She was later released on bail. Senior Police Inspector, Khar police station, Dattatray Bargude said Nidhi has been booked under IPC sections 279, 337 and the Motor Vehicle Act and investigations in the case, including recording of statements of those present at the scene, are on.
