The Economics Of Baahubali.

I just watched the movie in Hindi at PVR Ludhiana. It was well attended for a Sat Afternoon show, although not houseful.

The dubbing was really bad, and the dialogues were cringe worthy. I wasn't paying much attention to whats on screen. The movie didn't really require it.

All the time I was watching the movie I was thinking, Should Gults even be making a movie at such a grand scale, without taking care to dub it properly in languages that they release it?

Entertainment industry - especially movies that cater to masses facilitate the biggest transfer of wealth from the have nots to the haves. They are worse even sociologically, because they reinforce all regressive Indian values - like misogyny, hero worship, etc.

The economics part is mitigated to an extent by the extraordinary ticket prices charged by Baahubali exhibitors (according to reports of NRIs on this db). This means most of the wealth transfer is from upper middle classes to the rich class. I personally think this is the best argument one can make for the anti-piracy campaign of this movie.

But wouldn't it better, if Gult movies made on this scale are made for markets other than their domestic markets? Sorta how exporting industries do.

That this movie will gross more in Telugu than in Hindi is the biggest failure of Baahubali. Not to mention, its humongous success domestically, will probably affect box office receipts of other movies as well in Telugu.

It would've been awesome if tickets for the Telugu version were 50% of the Hindi version. Especially in India.

----------------------------------------------------------

The movie itself is extremely well made. Despite predictable story, and the lousy acting of almost all of its leads. especially Satyaraj was horrible.

Rajamouli's film making itself reminds me of my favourite tennis player Richard Gasquet - an unbeatable talent in the junior level, but someone who never worked on his weaknesses to become a truly great tennis player at the pro level.

His weaknesses. Horrible casting, bad dialogue writing, too much emphasis on hero worship, script itself.

His strengths - incredible visual director, to the extent that he's probably even scared of realising how good he really is. Its obvious he has held himself back a little too much in this movie, filling in his insecurity (about his visual prowess) with horrible graphics.

Next time, I hope he just lets go. Fcuk graphics. May be he can steal Maniratnam's location scout, and give us a truly pan-Indian film.

I'm not going to talk about the inconsistencies in the movie. They are irrelevant. It is simply a well made film, within the boundaries of TFI.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think this Murugadoss fellow may attempt to make something similar after watching this, but I hope for Tamil movie goer's sake, he doesn't.

I wish Indians don't make these sort of movies, but I can't stop them from making them. So I'm just going to sit back and say I really enjoyed this Baahubali.

p.s. I understand that to market the movies outside domestic markets, they have to be unique. And Baahubali doesn't qualify at all. It is just a regular Tollywood potboiler.

I liked Baahubali as much as I liked Jurassic World.

I find it hard to criticize the movie.

I did watch the movie in Hindi.felt like sumthing is missing all Over.the graphics, trol.the first song ,I felt like what the fck,he took 3 yrs to make this movie and he suld have atleast thought of some logic to get him up the river like a human not like a comic super hero does.

He totally lost the plot concentrating much on this vfx I think, very predictable screenplay..the avalanche ,better not to talk abt it.

The graphics spoil the visual continuity of the film. And thus it affects the music too - although the music isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

But the vfx in this movie is much better than most Indian movies I've seen. Just that they are overused, and the film would probably be much better without it.

The best shot in the movie is the at the climax. and slightly before the interval when a decapitated guy walks away from Shiva.
