roxiczone Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 I watched Bahubali again and this time I was able to identify many reasons why I didn't like it. It is surprising that I did not like it, as Fantasy and Sci Fi is my favourite genre, I already liked Rajamouli visual and tech-savvy style from Eega and Magadheera, and I was looking forward to Bahubali from the moment it was announced. I even loved the first trailer. So, really I have no bias against the movie. I dislike it genuinely because it has some very bad elements, actually I will go ahead and say it is a 2 hour bad movie + a 30 min good movie. The only redeeming part of the movie is the battle sequence. I am sure those who like it will admit it is only those last 30 min that they are raving about. I am going to share those bad elements in hope that the filmmakers of Bahubali take them on board as constructive criticism and future Indian filmmakers do not make the same mistakes. 1. No plot development. Where is the story? The first 30 min of the movie our hero is trying to climb a waterfall, jumps around like Tarzan, and then falls in love with a mask that has fallen from above. The next 30 min he is stalking a warrior woman to whom the mask belongs, bizarrely trying to bring out her femininity and realize her true place: A woman. Then, for no reason of his own, he takes on her mission to rescue the imprisoned queen, and he literally breezes into the heavily armed kingdom and abducts her like a cake walk, and the rest of the movie is a flashback to tell him who he is. 2. Forced love interest. The love story with the warrior woman(Avantika) is not only unnecessary, it is disgusting. She is suppose to be on a noble mission to rescue the imprisoned queen, and a total stranger comes along to show her, her place by putting make up on her and stripping her naked. I am surprised the feminists have not kicked up a fuss. I am not a feminist myself, but I thought it was sick and disgusting. Is it any wonder that rape is endemic in Indian society with such portrayals of women. 3. No character development. None of the characters are developed, they are cardboard cut outs, put together through a hodge podge of references and have confused personalities. Shivdu: Hercules, Krishna + Bhima. His first 20 years of his life and told in a few minutes of a song sequence. His only mission is to climb a waterfall, and he himself does not know why. Then when he gets there, he has nothing else to do but stalk a woman. There is never any explanation as to why he has superhuman strength, he just does. All other characters just ogle at him like a demi-god, because has has strong arms. Avantika: Angry radical rebel warrior woman. Immediately melts and transforms into a hot babe and lays down with Shivadu after he tells her "I am a man, you are a woman, I am here to love you" Katapa: Gandalf + Bhisma + Eklavya from VVC's movie. Is duty bound to the kingdom and to protect the royal family despite being a good guy, but sneaks away at night attempts to betray the king by freeing the captive queen, who refuses because she's waiting for her son to free her! Then, when her son does actually arrive to free her, he tries to kill him. Queen: Kunti + Devki + Jaya Bachan's character from Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham + Acid. She awaits her son to come back to rescue her, and knows when his feet touch down in the kingdom. She is vengeful and blood thirsty and even has her own BG score everytime her eyes go mad red. The most OTT character in the movie. Shivdu's step mother: Yashoda + jealousy. Immediately claims her right to Shivdu as her son after finding baby Shivdu in the river. Then jealously guards him all her life from going to the waterfall. Disappears when Shivdu gets to the top, and then appears out of nowhere just in time for the flashback reveal. Vichal deva: Dhitrastha + evil. The lame king, who was the eldest but lost the throne to his normal brother and now wants his son to become king. Has nothing else to do but be evil and have people whipped and flogged for no reason. Mahindra Bahubali: Yudishtra + Arjuna + Karan. He is the epitome of dharma/righteousness, the peoples favourite heir to the throne, Bhishma, I mean Katapa favourite. He also taunts his half brother that he will make him his army chief commander. Bahla deva: Duryodhana + evil. He has little to do but sneer at his brother all the time or kill CG bisons. The Klicka tribe and one eyed leader: Human Orks. Pops up out of nowhere after an Item number(during a flashback!) to lay siege to the kingdom. They are savage, beastly and black skinned(hmm?) 4. Three unnecessary and long moronic songs: There are three completely unnecessary songs that seem like they have been juxtposed from a regular commercial movie into an epic. The first is a dream sequence with our hero chasing an apparition of Avantika, who he already knows she looks like from just her mask, though everybody wears the same mask in her tribe. The second is the old romantic number in Swiss Alps routine, where all of a sudden out of nowhere oasis, swans and romantic set appears in the mountains. The third is an Item number with three white women engaging in lesbian like dance, which appear during what should be a thrilling man-hunt for a traitor who is about to aid in in the invasion of the kingdom. What is Rajamouli thinking? Is he spending 200 crores for this? Either make an Epic we can be proud of or make a mindless commercial movie. Instrumental songs are fine, but not shameless commercial numbers. If Rajamouli is serious about showing Bahubali to the world, he needs to immediately cut out these three stupid songs. I am not sure how an Indian filmmaker cannot realize how laughable and stupid these look to non-Indians. 5. Poor Aesthetic choices: Considering Rajamouli's accomplished visual style in Eega and Magadheera, it surprises me that he okayed some very bad shots. Some of the kingdom shots look like cardboard models, they need more details. Some of the aerial shots look fake. The CG bison was not needed at all, it is a waste of money. If I can notice the bad shots, then I am sure experts can too, and I am sure Rajamouli can too. There should be a much more stringent executive process in vetting shots. Bad shots in a 200 crore epic which has taken 3 years to make is not acceptable. You would never see this in Hollywood. Seriously, except for the last 30 min battle sequence and the cinematography, there is nothing much else going for this movie at all. It is not a movie I can proudly show to a non-Indian and tell them this is India's answer to LOTR/300/Avatar. Notice how virtually all the reviews on IMDB are by Indians. Being proud does not mean being blind.
