Saidhulu Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 HYDERABAD: Tall statements of meticulous preparation that the TDP government claimed it did for the Godavari Pushkarams got washed away on Day One with several pilgrims dying in a stampede that occurred soon after the festival was thrown open to the general public. The AP government had allocated Rs 1,642 crore for the event, constituted several committees of ministers, deployed dozens of IAS and IPS officers besides 100 special deputy collectors to ensure that the massive event is incident-free. But all they could say after the stampede was that they had no idea that the turnout would be so big. "We focused more on publicity than planning," admitted a senior AP official. After sanctioning Rs 1,642 crore exclusively for the Godavari Pushkarams arrangements, the state wanted to market it as an example of the mass event organizing capacity of the sunrise' state. However, sources in the government said works worth crores of rupees were handed over to ineligible people, that too without following the tender system. "This resulted in a compromise in the quality of works. Those who got the contracts included TDP bigwigs and those close to the state government," said the sources. Some examples of the inadequate arrangements at the Pushkarams venue include the bathrooms constructed along the ghats having no water supply. On top of that, the authorities had announced that pilgrims carrying plastic bottles will not be allowed to bathe at the ghats. As a result, there was no water for bathing and none to drink. "As pilgrims waited outside the Pushkara Ghat for almost two hours, children and the aged got dehydrated due to the hot conditions and lack of drinking water and that acted as one of the triggers for the stampede as soon as the gates were thrown open," a senior official in the AP intelligence department told TOI. full article http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Rs-1642-crore-Pushkar-plan-goes-awry/articleshow/48075709.cms baga avvaledu.. meeku baga ainda?
