This is Mr. Senthil Kumar. He works at the Shell Petrol Pump in Siddapura, Whitefield, Bangalore. I was at the petrol pump last evening where Senthil helped me fill the fuel. I gave him my debit card for payment which he swiped. But the card terminal was not responding for long and hence I asked him to cancel it and take cash payment instead. He even asked me if I got a message from my bank, which I didn’t. After about 2 hours, I did get a message from the bank about the transaction. I rushed back to the petrol station to get a refund and wondering how they will verify my claim that I paid cash. I got down from my car and thought of approaching the manager inside. But before I could make it to the door, Mr. Senthil came running to me. He asked me for my card; verified my card number with a printed transaction receipt he had; explained to me that the machine had some problem and it started working later; gave me my money back; and said ‘sorry’. And he did all the communication with the most pleasant smile on his face. A very likable fellow!

What makes this incident even more special is that Senthil has a speech disorder. He cannot speak. All his communication was through sign language. And he apologized to me by writing S O R R Y on his palm. I wrote back Thank You. A very profound humbling moment I had yesterday! People from Bangalore, when you are at this petrol pump next time, ask for Senthil, show him this picture, and make him feel special.
