If its a repost please excuse me STEM OPT Reform Under Consideration by USICE as Revealed in the Opposing Political Force's Letter to DHS Secretary On June 8, 2015, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa wrote a letter to the DHS Secretary to express his concern with the DHS STEM OPT reform reportedly under consideration by the DHS. The letter indicates that the STEM OPT modernization and reform would include the following: (1) Allowing foreign students with degrees in STEM fields to receive up to two 24-month extensions beyond the original 12-month period provided under OPT regulations, for a total of up to six years of post-graduation employment in student status (A student who graduates from a STEM bachelor’s degree program could work for up to three years after graduation in student status: 12-month regular OPT + 24 month STEM OPT, then go on to get a master’s degree and work for three more years after that: 12-month regular OPT + 24 month STEM OPT. Thus, under the proposed new regulation, a foreign student could work in the United States post-graduation on a student visa for a total of up to six years}; and (2) Authorizing foreign graduates of non-STEM U.S. degree programs to receive the 24-month extension of the OPT period, even if the STEM degree upon which the extension is based is an earlier degree and not for the program from which the student is currently graduating (e.g. student has a bachelor’s in chemistry and is graduating from an M.B.A. program). Foregoing proposal was reportedly revealed by ICE in its letter to the Chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Chuck Grassley dated May 28, 2015, who later sent a letter to the DHS Secretary on June 8, 2015 expressing his concerns and opposition. Here is a copy of the letter. Source: http://www.immigration-law.com/
