KCR, it's time to deliver key promises

Unemployment And Delay In Release Of Job Notifications Have Put Students On The Warpath

Riding high on people's expectations of more jobs based on promises made all through the statehood movement, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had won an historic election last June. But a year later, the ruling party is facing a massive stir from within, with thousands of students planning to hit the streets demanding the jobs that had been promised to them.

Osmania University, once the hotbed of the Telangana movement and the scene of hundreds of protests that ended in stone pelting and pitched battles with the police, now again wears a revolutionary look. Discontent is brewing and disillusioned students groups are once again making posters denouncing the government's apathy and planning protests. K Chandrasekhar Rao, who was earlier hailed as a hero, has fallen off the popularity chart in these corridors.

“We are completely disillusioned with life. There are no jobs for us and we have no one to turn to. We were taken in by promises of jobs once the new state comes into being, but we have been left in the lurch,“ rues B Stalin, a student leader.

While the country's overall unemployment rate per thousand people aged more than 15 stands at 4.9 per cent, the rate is as high as 33 per cent in Telangana, according to the latest Socio Economic Caste Census. According to the government's own admission, a staggering 70.6 per cent in the age group of 15 to 35 depend on some sort of small self-employment to eke out a living, while there are 11 lakh unemployed youth in the state. Telangana also stands sixth lowest in the salaried job sector, with only 7.64 per cent people in the districts having jobs in the organised sector. The TRS had promised to create 50,000 vacancies by driving out Andhraites settled in the state and passionate youth leaders were taken in by the promises that were almost impossible to achieve, say analysts.

According to modest estimates by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (T-JAC), there are over 1.70 lakh vacancies in the government sector that have not been filled up. “The government has failed to live up to the expectations of the youth. It's clear that politics in the state will now revolve around the issue of jobs. We will knock on the doors of the chief minister and knock on every other door to address the issue of unemployed youth,“ said M Kodandaram, chairman of TJAC.

The government, on its part, blames the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission for delaying the government job notifications. The state has set up its own public service commission to resolve the issue and says it is ready to draw up a yearly calendar to check the rate of unemployment.

But TJAC, which was asked to disband after statehood was achieved, is not amused. “The battle continues and on July 26, the Telangana Vidyavantula Vedika will organise a mass sen sitization workshop on the issue of employment,“ says Kodandaram.

Meanwhile, all the splinter students' groups are coming together to launch rallies, protest meetings and dharnas across varsities in the state. “The government made many promises and basically , the Telangana movement was built on the issue of unemployment. But now the Telangana government does not seem to be fulfilling its promises,“ said Bhaskar K, general secretary of District Youth Federation of India.

Peeved, he added: “There will be rallies, there will be a big movement. There are lots of vacancies in universities and we have decided to hold meetings in all universities within the next 15 days. Educated youth are not getting jobs and many are migrating away from the state. We need to stop the exodus.“
