Uber Driver Arrested For Allegedly Masturbating

At a time when Kolkata was emerging as a hotspot for private ride-share companies, as stated in surveys, a driver was arrested for "outraging the modesty of a woman." The Kolkata Police has taken into custody a driver of Uber on the basis of a complaint lodged by 25-year-old woman that he was allegedly masturbating while driving. The driver was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed earlier this month. The police has pressed charges under Section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and Section 509 (word or gesture intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC against the driver.

 

According to the police the woman hired a taxi from Elgin Road to Netaji Nagar on July 8 at about 7 pm. "During journey she noticed through the looking glass that driver was driving with one hand and masturbating with other," a senior police officer said. The accused driver was arrested from Kustia Road in Tiljala after maintaining a watch for days, the police said.

 

The company has issued a statement saying that they have suspended the driver.

"In this case, we immediately connected with our rider, suspended the driver partner and assisted the local authorities with all necessary information required for their investigation. In fact, the rider was satisfied with our immediate assistance and action and continues to frequently use Uber post this alleged incident," said Karun Arya, the Uber spokesperson. He further added that the "driver had all valid documentation and had cleared the independent background check" prior to his appointment.
