I picked up the hardcover, while in Madras. And finished it just yesterday.

Its not about europeans. Its about our people, our cities. and how involved they were in the war, and what it meant to them.

 

Very vivid descriptions of madras regiment, and the what the city itself underwent during the seige of second world war.

appendices lo tons of references. koncham ibbandi, to go back and forth to read them all, to completely understand the context of particular phrases and words.

 

the book doesn't glorify war, or the Indians (it traces), who participated in it.

this book slightly reminded me of the recent brilliant hindi movie - Detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

The author himself describes this as forensic non-fiction. He probably got bits and pieces of information from several of his extended family members, and put them all together.
